I par...Very nice analysis of the situation, Paige.<br /><br />I particularly appreciate your calling attention to the negative effect of hyping preliminary research results. From the prevention side of the fence, too much hype about both HIV drugs and potential vaccines has made it harder to get people to focus on prevention. Frontline service providers often hear "Oh, I don't have to worry about HIV--they have drugs for that now." <br /><br />When I attended the 2008 International AIDS Conference, the overwhelming message was "We cannot treat our way out of this epidemic. We are going to have to focus more on prevention."<br /><br />An effective vaccine will be a real godsend---but that is years down the road, if it's even possible. Right now, we can lower the incidence of HIV by:<br /><br />1. Encouraging people to take responsibility for their own health (and that of their sexual or drug-sharing partners). Condoms work, people!<br /><br />2. Empowering women (particularly those in developing countries) to control their bodies<br /><br />3.
